Temporal Variability in Heterotrophic Carbon Dioxide Emissions From A Drained Tropical Peatland in Uganda

نویسندگان

چکیده

Our study measured heterotrophic carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions in a drained peatland under potato cultivation south-western Uganda. Soil losses have not previously been reported for this land use, and our set out to capture the range temporal variation emissions, as well investigate relationships with key environmental variables. chamber-based emission measurements were taken over five days at four points time year daily monthly variability, including day night sampling any diurnal variations temperatures soil flux. Differences microtopography from mounding of soils beds drainage trenches had significant effect on rate Diurnal showed no difference or raised between night. More effects flux drivers, such water table depth, observed months, rather than hours days. There differences variables flux, depending if recently disturbed not. Area-weighted based gave mean annual factor 98.79 ± 1.7 t CO ha -1 y (± standard error) use.

Mobility of black carbon in drained peatland soils

Amount, stability, and distribution of black carbon (BC) were studied at four sites of a large peatland (“Witzwil”) formerly used as a disposal for combustion residues from households to derive BC displacement rates in the profile. Possible artefacts from thermal oxidation with Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) on BC quantification of C-rich deposits were inferred by choosing three sites ...

Variable carbon losses from recurrent fires in drained tropical peatlands.

Tropical peatland fires play a significant role in the context of global warming through emissions of substantial amounts of greenhouse gases. However, the state of knowledge on carbon loss from these fires is still poorly developed with few studies reporting the associated mass of peat consumed. Furthermore, spatial and temporal variations in burn depth have not been previously quantified. Thi...

Partitioning Carbon Dioxide Emission and Assessing Dissolved Organic Carbon Leaching of a Drained Peatland Cultivated with Pineapple at Saratok, Malaysia

Pineapples (Ananas comosus (L.) Merr.) cultivation on drained peats could affect the release of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere and also the leaching of dissolved organic carbon (DOC). Carbon dioxide emission needs to be partitioned before deciding on whether cultivated peat is net sink or net source of carbon. Partitioning of CO2 emission into root respiration, microbial respiration, ...

Heavy Carbon as a Tracer in Heterotrophic Carbon Dioxide Assimilation*

The first proof that heterotrophic, non-photosynthetic bacteria can fix carbon dioxide was presented in 1935 by Wood and Werkman (15). This investigation introduced the first experimental evidence that carbon dioxide serves as a building material in synthetic reactions of all forms of life, whether simple or complex. The synthesis of citric acid from oxalacetate by avian tissue was shown by Kre...

Interannual variability in the peatland-atmosphere carbon dioxide exchange at an ombrotrophic bog

[1] Eddy covariance measurements of net ecosystem carbon dioxide (CO2) exchange (NEE) were taken at an ombrotrophic bog near Ottawa, Canada from 1 June 1998 to 31May 2002. Temperatures during this period were above normal except for 2000 and precipitation was near normal in 1998 and 1999, above normal in 2000, and well below normal in 2001. Growing period maximum daytime uptake ( 0.45 mg CO2 m ...
